Polignano a Mare surprised the hell out of me.

When we first got to Puglia and started making a plan for where we should and shouldn’t prioritize, Polignano a Mare almost didn’t make the cut.

Before spending the summer in Puglia, we had heard that Polignano a Mare was one of the more touristy places in the Valle d’Itria so we were a bit wary. But I have to say, when we visited at the very end of July, it didn’t feel particularly touristy at all, and in fact, I kind of wish we’d been able to spend more time there.

polignano a mare things to do

From the absolutely breathtaking and justifiably famous beach in the historic center, to the winding roads and little shops in old buildings still occupied by elderly Italian people, Polignano a Mare feels like the furthest thing you could get from a tourist trap.

If anything, it felt like everything you’re promised in Puglia. Authentic, Italian, beautiful, welcoming.

Whether you’re basing yourself in Polignano a Mare as you explore Puglia’s Adriatic coast or you just do a day trip to Polignano a Mare from Bari, I think you should absolutely prioritize a visit here. Keep reading to hear about all the best things to do in Polignano a Mare!

8 Unforgettable Things to Do in Polignano a Mare, Puglia

1. Wander Through the Old Town

Polignano a Mare’s centro storico is a must-see for anyone visiting Puglia, and if you’ve been around the blog before you might know that getting lost in an old town is one of my favorite activities.

It’s well known, like much of this region, for its characteristic limestone buildings and winding cobblestone streets, and is the perfect place to wander and get lost in history. Begin your exploration by entering through the historic Porta Vecchia, the town’s old gate, and from there, just get lost in the alleyways! It’s not uncommon to turn a corner and find yourself in front of one of the most stunning views you’ve ever seen, which is a nice surprise.

Key landmarks include Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the town’s lively main square, where you can enjoy an aperitivo while soaking up the local atmosphere and people watching. Here, you’ll also find the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Assunta, a 13th-century church with a modest exterior but a beautiful interior that might be worth exploring. Don’t miss the Palazzo dell’Orologio, a striking clock tower that adds to the charm of the square.

But for me what’s most exciting are the little quirks that aren’t the main landmarks. Besides the poetry you’ll find on the walls (scroll down for more on that), it’s not uncommon to find yourself looking at an art installation, a makeshift craft stand, book exchange, or strange little garden and furniture situation. It’s just incredibly visually appealing, and I really loved exploring.

I would recommend exploring the old town early in the morning before the crowds arrive. The quiet streets, with their rich history and breathtaking viewpoints, are best appreciated in the calm of dawn. And if you’re in the mood for a break, there are plenty of cafes and wine bars around the square.

2. Discover the Public Poetry

One of the many slightly “hipster” quirks of this town is the poetry you’ll find scrawled along the walls (and stairs, doors, grates, etc., in the historic center.

The verses are the work of Guido Il Flâneur, a local street artist and poet from Bari who wanted to share the beauty of literature with the city. His work has made it so Polignano a Mare is often called the “town of poetry.”

I sadly did not manage to explore this, but one of the most iconic spots to find Guido’s work is the Vicolo della Poesia, a hidden staircase known as the “poetry steps,” located near Balconata Sul Mare. It’s not marked on any maps (except mine ;)), but it’s not impossible to find either.

Unsurprisingly it’s entirely in Italian (a mix of his own writing as well as famous quotes), so you may want to come prepared with you Google Translate app so you can appreciate the message, or if you want to brush up on your Italian beforehand you might even be able to read it yourself!

The poetry is scattered throughout the historic center, but many are located near Terrazza Santo Stefano and along the side streets.

3. Relax at Puglia’s Most Famous Beach

polignano a mare guide for puglia italy

Arguably Polignano a Mare’s most famous attraction would be Lama Monachile Beach, so you can’t leave without seeing it. Tucked between towering limestone cliffs, this little pebble beach just screams postcard, and it’s not hard to see why it pulls in thousands of tourists. I kind of assumed that it was overhyped, but honestly it’s stunning and I spent a long long time there watching the people swimming and cliff jumping from this viewpoint.

While the Polignano a Mare beach is a must-see, it can get crowded, especially in peak season. If you’re looking to escape the hustle, consider exploring alternative swimming spots along the coast. A short walk from the main beach leads to lesser-known gems like Grottone, a natural swimming pool with crystal-clear waters.

Though it’s a bit more difficult to access, this serene spot is perfect for those who prefer fewer crowds. Another option is Cala Paguro, a charming little cove with flat rocks for sunbathing and a more relaxed vibe. For those of us who are a bit more high maintenance (me) I can recommend Coco beach club in Cozze.

4. Go Cliff Jumping (or Just Watch the Pros Do It!)

This one’s for the daredevils out there. Polignano a Mare is one of the best spots for you to do some cliff jumping if you’re interested! The limestone cliffs surrounding Lama Monachile are popular spots to take a leap into the crystal-clear waters below. I was a bit of a wuss this time around, but I saw countless people doing it, so I feel pretty confident that it’s relatively safe and fun.

(Note: I wouldn’t advise participating unless you see plenty of other people partaking!)

The easiest place to do this would be on the cliffs at Lama Monachile, just follow the locals and get a good perch, or alternatively swim out and climb up. Do NOT forget water shoes if you plan to do this though. Those sharp rocks are no joke, and you will hurt yourself without something on your feet.

A fun experience that happens every year in September is that Polignano a Mare hosts the most famous cliff diving event in the world. The athletes dive 27 meters into the sea right there above the Lama Monachile. It’s obviously very difficult to get accommodation in town during this time, but if you’re in the area it may be worth making a day trip! It’s very cool, and honestly is something that’s kind of on my bucket list now.

5. Explore Caves & Grottos on a Scenic Boat Tour

One of the best ways to really appreciate the beauty of Polignano a Mare is exploring it by boat. Now, a boat tour is always going to be a winning decision, but Polignano a Mare is especially exciting because you’ll be able to explore the unbelievably beautiful caves and access some swimming areas that are typically much harder to reach.

6. Admire the Iconic Domenico Modugno Statue

polignano a mare guide for puglia italy

One of the must-see landmarks in Polignano a Mare is the statue of Domenico Modugno, the local hero who wrote and performed the iconic song “Nel blu dipinto di blu” (better known as “Volare”). This song, which won two Grammys in 1959, is one of the most famous in Italian history, and Modugno, though he left the town as a boy, remains a cherished figure in Polignano’s cultural identity.

The impressive bronze statue of Modugno overlooks the sea, his arms outstretched as if inviting visitors to bask in the beauty of the Puglian coastline. You can find the statue in a spacious square lined with restaurants, making it an ideal spot for dinner with sweeping views of the Adriatic. For a perfect sunset experience, grab a drink from one of the nearby bars like Malidea, a laid-back spot with tables overlooking the water.

7. Immerse Yourself in Contemporary Art

For art lovers (or anyone wanting to get out of the beating sun for a moment), Polignano a Mare is home to Puglia’s only contemporary art museum.

The museum is housed inside a stunning building overlooking the Adriatic and holds both permanent and temporary exhibitions for Italian and Puglian artists. This is an ideal way to see a different side of Italian culture and history, and a super unique thing to do.

8. Eat & Drink to your Heart’s Content

Polignano a Mare is bursting with incredible places to eat and drink. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, authentic pizza, or just a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up, this town delivers. Don’t miss the local caffè speciale at Super Mago del Gelo Mario Campanella—black coffee with amaretto foam and lemon zest. FAQs about Things to Do in Polignano a Mare

Is it worth visiting Polignano a Mare?

Yes, without a doubt it’s worth visiting Polignano a Mare. I think this town is some of the best of what this region of Puglia has to offer.

You’ll get a good mix of historic center filled with bars and restaurants, and good access to beaches both within and nearby the center. Not to mention that Polignano a Mare is well located if you want to visit other towns in the Valle d’Itria like Alberobello, Bari, or Monopoli.

Huge bonus is that Polignano a Mare has some incredible views, so you shouldn’t have a hard time having a beautiful meal or beautiful view from your room.

How long should I spend in Polignano a Mare?

We spent a day in Polignano a Mare, which I think is plenty if you’re just passing through and staying elsewhere. However, if you want to stay in Polignano a Mare I think you should give yourself at least three days, give or take depending on the rest of your itinerary.

One day should be enough to explore the main highlights, and even have a stunning meal. If you’re short on time or staying in a nearby town, this can be a fulfilling stop on your Puglia trip.

However, if you’re planning to stay in Polignano a Mare itself, a three-day visit allows for a more relaxed experience. You’ll have time to soak in the charm of the town without rushing, explore the caves along the coastline by boat, and perhaps enjoy the sunset from different viewpoints. With more time, you can also visit nearby attractions like the famous Grotta della Poesa or take a day trip to Monopoli or Alberobello.

Ultimately, the length of your stay depends on how much you want to immerse yourself in the town’s slow, scenic lifestyle. A day can give you a taste, but a few days will let you fully savor everything Polignano a Mare has to offer.

Is Polignano a Mare walkable?

When I answer this kind of question I like to clarify what kind of “walkable” we’re talking about here. If we’re asking about accessibility, like much of Europe, it’s questionable. I’m not an expert, so your mileage may vary, but I think Polignano a Mare is relatively ok.

You may struggle in a wheelchair or if cobblestones are a problem for you, but on the whole it wasn’t very hilly and we didn’t encounter many stairs aside from the odd handful at a time. I would suggest checking photos and Google Maps images to get a good feel for your comfort levels.

If we’re talking about distance and whether or not you can walk the town, the answer is definitely yes. Polignano a Mare is relatively small, and the center is even smaller. I believe that the historic center is even pedestrianized, so you won’t have to worry about cars either.

Is Polignano a Mare expensive?

Polignano a Mare is slightly more expensive than other, less visited parts of Puglia. However, it is not more expensive than the rest of Italy.

The most expensive aspect of your time here will be the accommodation, and if you want to save a bit there you can choose to stay in a nearby town and drive into Polignano a Mare instead. Towns like Mola di Bari or Cozze, just a short drive away, offer more affordable lodging options while still allowing you to enjoy the beauty of Polignano a Mare during the day.

In terms of dining, while prices at some of the cliffside restaurants with stunning views can be higher (and not really worth it), there are plenty of options for all budgets. You can easily find authentic trattorias and local eateries where you can enjoy fresh seafood, pasta, and regional specialties without breaking the bank. Street food, like “panzerotti” and “focaccia,” also offers delicious, affordable bites, making it easy to eat well on a budget.

Overall, while Polignano a Mare may be pricier than more remote parts of Puglia, it offers a range of experiences that cater to different budgets. With some planning, you can enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of this stunning coastal town without overspending.

Which is nicer Monopoli or Polignano a Mare?

In my opinion, Polignano a Mare is significantly nicer than Monopoli. Monopoli felt a lot more commercialized and touristy than Polignano a Mare, which maintained a level of authentic that I appreciated.

Polignano a Mare is famous for its stunning cliffside views of the vibrant turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. The town feels like an untouched gem despite being such a popular destination.

Walking through the narrow, winding streets of the historic center, you can feel the charm of a place that has preserved its traditional Italian character, and the balconies overlooking the sea provide some of the most breathtaking views in southern Italy, making it a perfect destination for those who want that picture perfect Puglian retreat.

Monopoli, on the other hand, while beautiful, feels busier and more tailored for tourists. The harbor and old town are charming, and there are definitely some lovely spots to explore, however, it lacks the same intimate and real vibe you find in Polignano a Mare.

Overall, if you’re looking for a destination with dramatic views, a peaceful ambiance, and a taste of authentic Italian coastal life, Polignano a Mare is hard to beat. Monopoli is still worth visiting, especially if you enjoy vibrant nightlife and larger beaches, but for a truly special experience, Polignano a Mare takes the crown.

How much does it cost to eat at the cave restaurant in Italy?

I hate to break it to you but the set menus start at €195 per person, and that’s without wine. If I had to be totally honest with you I think this is a waste of time and money.

If you’re really invested in doing it, it may be worth it to you, but to me, and most locals I spoke to, it’s just a bit of a money grab. Also, I’ve heard the food isn’t even that special. Save yourself the trouble and eat at a genuinely nice restaurant instead.
