Although Salento may not remain the hidden gem of southern Italy for long, it is still one of the most affordable areas in Italy to visit. Not to mention, it’s as rustic and authentic as it gets—especially if you choose a small-town hotel or, better yet, a masseria in Salento as your base.
If you’ve been around the blog, you’ll know Salento completely stole our hearts after our six-week stay in 2024. So much so, in fact, that we booked a return trip for 2025 as soon as we got home!
Your visit to Salento won’t be filled with long days sightseeing, big cities, or epic nights out… but what this region lacks in flashiness, it makes up for with incredible food, sun, and true relaxation.
To get an authentic taste of Salento, consider leaving Gallipoli and Lecce (its biggest and most well-known cities) behind and exploring the off-the-beaten-track villages and countryside. My top recommendation? Choose somewhere small and independent to base yourself, where you’ll experience Salentino hospitality at its finest.
That’s why I’ve put together this list of 20 amazing hotels in Salento Puglia, from charming small-town stays to rural retreats. Let’s jump in!

How My Budget Tiers Work
The best masseria and hotel stays in Salento cover a range of budgets, but keep in mind that although the region’s popularity is on the rise, prices here can still be somewhat lower than in other parts of Puglia.
In this post, I’m using four budget tiers, given that Salento hotels really run the gamut when it comes to price. Here’s the breakdown of budget categories in this post, all in USD:
- Budget – €: Under $125/night
- Mid-Range – €€: $125 to $200/night
- Premium – €€€: $200 to 350/night
- Luxury – €€€€: $350+/night
High season (July-August) prices may be higher, while off-season stays are often more affordable. These ranges should serve as a good guide for most times of the year.

FAQs about Staying in a Masseria in Salento
How many days should I spend in Salento?
For a well-rounded Salento experience, I’d recommend spending at least 5 to 7 days. This gives you enough time to explore the region’s highlights—like the historic towns of Lecce, Gallipoli, and Otranto—while also venturing into off-the-beaten-path villages and stunning beaches. If you’re looking for a deeper dive into Salento’s culture, food, and laid-back lifestyle, extending your stay to 10 days or more allows you to savor the area at a more leisurely pace.
Is it better to stay in Otranto or Gallipoli?
Both Otranto and Gallipoli offer unique experiences, so the best choice depends on what you’re looking for. Otranto is perfect for travelers seeking scenic beaches, historic charm, and a quieter atmosphere. The town’s stunning coastline and ancient architecture make it ideal for a relaxing stay, with plenty of opportunities to explore cultural sites.
On the other hand, Gallipoli is a bit livelier, with a vibrant food scene, bustling nightlife, and easy access to nearby beaches. It’s a great base if you want more dining and entertainment options, though it can get quite busy in peak season.
If you’re after a peaceful retreat, Otranto might be the better fit, but if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and convenience, Gallipoli is a solid choice.
