Otranto was one of the last places we visited in Salento. We spent some time here as we were making our way back up the peninsula at the end of our perfect month in Puglia.

Nestled along the Adriatic coastline, the easternmost bit of Italy, Otranto is a wonderful little blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Its geographic location makes it picture perfect for sunrise, and its city beaches are among some of the best in the region.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or a beach lover, Otranto will most definitely work its charm on you. So let’s get going so I can convince you that Otranto is worth a spot on your Salento itinerary.

6 Top Things to Do in Otranto, Puglia

REAL TALK: Puglia, like literally so many parts of Italy, can come under strain from overtourism. I beg you, BEG YOU, to not be an asshole when you’re traveling around Italy (or anywhere). I mostly like to assume that if you’re here on my blog, I can trust that you want to help preserve, rather than spoil, the integrity of wherever you’re traveling… but still. I would feel irresponsible if I didn’t still give a little reminder that if you plan to make the locals lives hell, you should stay home!

1. Lose Yourself in Otranto’s Old Town Charm

As always, I recommend you begin your exploration of Otranto by getting lost in the centro storico. The coastal town is a maze of narrow streets lined with whitewashed buildings, charming boutiques, and cozy cafes. At first, it felt a bit sleepy compared to some other towns we visited. After a bit more exploration, though, we soon realized that everyone was just down at the beach.

One of the landmarks you should try to see is Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata. I’m not normally a church person, but this one, which was built in the 11th century, has a really cool mosaic floor that I think is worth checking out.

Additionally, the nearby Chiesa di San Pietro is quite small, but dates back to the 9th century and has incredible Byzantine frescoes on the walls. I don’t visit many churches when I travel, but these two were particularly interesting.

2. Explore the Castle and Walk the Ancient City Walls

You really can’t miss the Castello Aragonese considering what an imposing presence it makes on the landscape of the town. It was constructed in the 15th century as a fortress against invasions. If you’re into visiting these types of attractions you can get a ticket for €12 (as of 2024; some may qualify for reduced prices) and tour the ramparts, towers, dungeons, and enjoy stellar views from the towers.

The municipality of Otranto also seems to use the castle to host rotating art exhibitions. For almost all of 2024, there’s been a Frida Kahlo exhibition on – so keep an eye out for these types of opportunities as well!

If you’re less interested in heading inside the castle, you can still explore the ancient city walls that surround the old town which were also constructed to deter invaders. This is also a great way to people-watch and see all the locals down at the city beach.

3. Soak Up the Sun at Otranto’s Pristine City Beach

Speaking of the beach, Otranto has some of the best city-beaches of all the bigger towns in Salento. Not only is it convenient, sitting super close to the heart of the centro storico, but it’s also pristine, which can be a rarity among some city beaches.

Just along the city walls you’ll find lots of space to sunbathe and sit out on the concrete with the locals, and across the harbor, just a 10-minute walk from the old town, you’ll find Spiaggia dei Gradoni where you can also book a chair at a lido if you’re craving something a bit more luxe.

4. Savor a Sunset Aperitivo by the Water

One of my favorite things about summer generally, and especially summer in Italy, is enjoying an aperol spritz at sunset.

Like almost nothing is better than this. This is what life is all about.

If you happen to be in Otranto at or near sunset, be sure to grab a drink by the water.

Obviously you won’t get to see the literal sun set, given that it’s on the east coast, but you’ll still get to see the beautiful sky change colors & hear the ocean waves.

5. Discover Italy’s Easternmost Point at Punta Palascìa Lighthouse

Speaking of being on the east coast, not too far out of town is the Punta Palascìa lighthouse.

This spot is the easternmost part of Italy, and also marks the point where the Adriatic and Ionian sea meet. Head here if you want a beautiful view, or if you want to say you’ve stood at the furthest east part of Italy!

6. Plan a Day Trip to Lecce or Swim at the Grotta della Poesia

Otranto is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region.

Consider a day trip to nearby towns like Lecce, known for its Baroque architecture, or the Grotta della Poesia, a famous and beautiful grotto and swimming point only about 30 minutes away.

Boat tours are also available to explore hidden grottos and admire the rugged coastline from the sea, and are always one of my favorite activities to do while traveling.

Check out The Cassiopèe, a 15m that will take you up or down the east coast of Salento – either as part of an all-day tour or as a private charter for your group or event.

Where to Eat in Otranto, Puglia

Like much of Salento, Otranto has a great selection of authentic local restaurants, and is a great place to sample some of Salento’s delicacies.

After a day of swimming and wandering you can treat yourself to some orecchiette, fresh seafood, or my absolute favorite Puglian dish—fava beans & chicory. We didn’t get to eat dinner here ourselves but here are the places we have saved to try next time:

  • Vicolo Matto Fishbar
  • Agli Angeli Ribelli
  • Patronale

We also were particularly pleased with L’Ortale Ristoro Salentissimo, a place with a vibe as cool as its name (which means “The Super Salento Garden Restaurant”). They do indeed have a killer garden out back, or another nice option could be to grab some to takeaway and bring it over to the beach while you relax.

When to Visit Otranto, Puglia

Summer (June to August): If you’re all about the beach, this is your time. The weather’s hot, the seaside energy is at its peak, but you’ll also be sharing it with plenty of other travelers—especially in July and August.

Spring (April to June) & Fall (September to October): My personal favorite for exploring Otranto. You get that perfect balance—nice weather and way fewer crowds. It’s a great time to really soak in the town’s history and atmosphere.

Winter (November to March): Looking for a quieter, more authentic vibe? Winter’s your best bet. Sure, it’s cooler, but you’ll practically have the town to yourself, and Otranto’s charm doesn’t go anywhere.
