10 Amazing Things to Do in Kampong Glam & Haji Lane That Will Make You Fall in Love with Singapore’s Irresistibly Creative Heritage District

Kampong Glam is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Singapore—equal parts history and hipster. Between the bold street art, indie shops, and iconic Haji Lane, it’s easy to spend hours wandering. This guide covers everything I love most, from quiet corners to cocktail bars and all the best bites in between.

Kampong Glam is one of the most well known neighborhoods in Singapore, so I was a bit skeptical if it would live up to its reputation or not. We ended up exploring Kampong Glam twice while we were in Singapore, once to take advantage of all the food, and once to shop till we dropped (and with this heat, we nearly took that literally).

Tucked away in the heart of the city, Kampong Glam is where old-world charm meets bold, creative (and probably gentrified?) energy. Once home to Malay royalty, this vibrant neighborhood is now a dynamic mix of history, culture, and hipster-cool. Some of my favorite meals and favorite shops can be found in Kampong Glam, so even if it can feel a bit overdone, it’s also well worth your time.

From the imposing golden Sultan Mosque, or the rows of traditional fabric shops along Arab Street, to the indie boutiques and vibrant murals of Haji Lane, Kampong Glam is one of the most exciting (and dare I say photogenic) places to explore in Singapore. Whether you’re here for the food, the street art, or just the vibes, this guide will show you exactly what not to miss.

10 Excellent Things to Do in Kampong Glam, Singapore

Real Talk:

Singapore – while less affected than some of its Southeast Asian neighbors – is not immune to overtourism, gentrification, and environmental damage. So please: don’t be an asshole when you travel here (or anywhere).

If you’ve made it to my blog, I’d like to think you too care about preserving the integrity of the places you visit – but I’ve seen enough disrespectful behavior from Western tourists to know it’s worth saying out loud:

If you’re going to make locals’ lives harder, just stay home.

1. Visit the Sultan Mosque and Discover Kampong Glam’s Heritage

kampong glam

The history of Kampong Glam is deeply rooted in Singapore’s Malay and Muslim heritage, and you can see that today through the mosques that still stand in the area. The Sultan Mosque is the crown jewel of Kampong Glam and one of the most important mosques in Singapore. You’ll see it basically as soon as you get near the neighborhood, and it shines overhead in its golden glory while you explore.

The mosque was originally built in 1824 for the first sultan of Singapore but the current building, with its massive golden dome and grand prayer hall, dates back to 1932. You can visit inside if you go outside of prayer times, and make sure to dress modestly!

Just a short walk away from the heart of Kampong Glam you’ll find the Malabar Muslim Jama-Ath Mosque with its striking blue-and-white tiled façade. Built in the 1950s, it’s the only mosque in Singapore affiliated with the Malabar Muslim community, which traces its roots to the southwestern coast of India. It’s a lesser-known gem and a peaceful spot if you’re looking to explore beyond the main tourist path.

Just behind the Sultan Mosque, Muscat Street has quietly become one of the coolest places in Kampong Glam to take in street art. It’s home to Gelam Gallery, Singapore’s first permanent outdoor art gallery—essentially a living alleyway of murals, graffiti, and rotating installations by both local and international artists.

kampong glam

The vibe here is way more chill than Haji Lane, and it feels more curated and less commercial.

You’ll find everything from massive abstract pieces to tiny, tucked-away stencil work, all spread across the walls, columns, and even the ground!

It’s a great spot to wander after the mosque, especially if you want a taste of Kampong Glam’s creative side without the crowds.

Keep an eye out for artist tags—you might even spot work by some of Singapore’s most recognized muralists.

3. Wander Haji Lane’s Street Art, Shops, and Chaos

Haji Lane is one of Singapore’s most colorful, creative, and visited streets (or alleys, depending how you measure it).

Originally, Haji Lane was home to small local businesses, and served as lodging for those making the pilgrimage to Mecca (hence the name “Haji”). Over the years, it’s transformed into a hipster paradise (or maybe nightmare depending who’s asking).

Today it’s not only jam-packed with shops, but it’s basically a street art gallery as well. Nearly every wall is splashed with vibrant murals, graffiti, and pop-art pieces. The one downside, and the reason I keep alluding to it being a bit… much… is that it is crowded here. Unless you come before things open, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find Haji Lane at a time that it isn’t totally full of other people. I still think it was worth visiting, but I can’t pretend it’s some authentic or hidden gem either.

Anyway, aside from the art, you can also find some pretty cool shops on Haji Lane, including a number of really quality vintage stores, and notably you won’t find any big chains—just small shops full of personality, which I appreciate.

4. Create a (Very On-Brand) Souvenir at Solace Studios

Okay okay, is Solace Studios a bit gimmicky? Yeah, without a doubt. But is it also kind of fun and – in my opinion – a great souvenir? Also yes.

There are several locations around Haji Lane that cater to different types of aesthetics, but the general concept is the same throughout in that they’re basically just big fun photobooth rooms. You’ll find props and sets and you can edit the photos afterwards too.

While this is something I might normally skip, I think it’s fun in a bit of an “on the nose” way to do a gimmicky photobooth on a street that kind of has a reputation for being gimmicky and full of photo-ops!

5. Shop the Coolest Indie Stores in Kampong Glam

My favorite part of Kampong Glam was the shopping, which is probably not entirely surprising if you’ve followed my guides before. The great thing about this neighborhood is that most of the shops are boutique and artisan shops rather than big name brands! For the full list of my shopping in Singapore guide you’ll have to check out my digital maps in the shop, but for now here’s a small curated list of my top picks!

1. Haji Lane: The Heart of Kampong Glam’s Indie Shopping

In general it’s worth just strolling down Haji Lane because almost every storefront is a cute little shop or cafe, but these are the most noteworthy IMO:

  • Vintagewknd: One of my faves. Original and reworked pieces spanning from the 1950s to Y2K.
  • Superwasted: Upcycled and vintage apparel with a rugged, edgy style.
  • Kaeru Thrift Store: Vintage finds from Japan and the US.

2. Arab Street: Textile and Craft Heaven

Adjacent to Haji Lane, Arab Street is lined with shops specializing in textiles, carpets, and traditional crafts. Highlights include:

  • Aik Bee Textile Co: selection of textiles and leathers at competitive prices.
  • Alibaba Fabrics: traditional fabrics and silks.
  • Al-Amal Creations: diverse range of Middle Eastern apparel and perfumeries.

6. Cool Down with a Cup of Teh Tarik

kampong glam

I wanna shout out one of my favorite regional beverages because I don’t want it to get lost in the food and drink section!

Te Tarik means “pulled tea” in Malay, and it’s a popular milk tea that you can find hot or iced.

It’s made by blending strong black tea with condensed milk, creating a rich and creamy beverage that’s great on its own, and especially useful to drink with spicy foods.

I highly recommend getting it from Kampong Glam Cafe while you enjoy a delicious meal.

7. Make Time for Sifr Aromatics (Trust Me)

If there’s one place I’ll rave about to anyone vaguely interested in scents, it’s Sifr Aromatics. Tucked away in a beautifully restored shophouse just a few minutes’ walk from the mosque, this little perfume atelier is not your average store. The space itself is worth stepping into—moody, quiet, almost sacred-feeling—but the real magic is in the bottles.

kampong glam

They create all their fragrances in-house using traditional perfumery techniques, and everything is done in small batches. You can browse their ready-made line (which, frankly, is already perfection), or book a custom scent-making session to create something entirely your own.

My friends know I always have room for another perfume bottle on my self, but the scent I bought here was truly one of the best-smelling things I’ve ever put on my body—full stop. And the fact that it’s not mass-produced just makes it feel that much more special.

Even if you’re short on time or not sure what you’re looking for, stop in, chat with the staff, and try a few of their blends. It’s one of the most unique, sensory-rich experiences you can have in Kampong Glam—and easily one of my favorite things I did in Singapore.

8. Drop into the Vintage Cameras Museum (If That’s Your Thing)

Photography lovers might enjoy stopping at the Vintage Cameras Museum. It’s a very niche, very unique experience. The museum itself – which is shaped like a camera and you have to enter through the lens – claims to hold over 1000 cameras that cover the whole evolution of photography.

The museum is interactive and quirky and they offer tours which are apparently quite good. I don’t think this is a must visit, but I do think it’s a lot of fun for photography enthusiasts.

9. Get Artsy at Aliwal Arts Centre

If you’re wandering around Kampong Glam and looking to experience something beyond the usual food and shopping, the Aliwal Arts Centre is a bit of an off the beaten path stop that shows you a totally different side to Singaporean culture.

Set in a restored school building from the 1950s, the space is home to a community of local artists and arts groups and there’s nearly always something going on there.

It’s best known for its urban and street arts focus, so expect everything from contemporary dance rehearsals and music gigs to graffiti workshops and cultural pop-ups. Be sure to check their website for tickets if you want to catch one of their shows!

10. Feel Fancy at Parkview Square & ATLAS Cocktail Bar

kampong glam

Ok, this one isn’t exactly in Kampong Glam, but it is less than a 5-minute walk from Haji Lane and a total hidden gem.

If you’re looking for something a little unexpected in Singapore, Parkview Square—nicknamed the “Gotham Building” for its striking Art Deco architecture—is a must-see. This skyscraper lowkey feels out of place with its dramatic bronze statues, ornate detailing, and serious Great Gatsby vibes.

But the real star is inside: ATLAS Cocktail Bar. One step into the impeccable art deco, gold-accented lobby and you’ll feel like you’re transported to the 1920s. You’ll find a three-story gin tower, velvet banquettes, and bartenders who are dressed to theme as well. The cocktails are elegant and inventive, the afternoon tea is a treat, and even a daytime visit just for coffee and a peek at the space is totally worth it.

Whether you’re into architecture, cocktails, or just want to feel a little fancy for an hour or two, ATLAS at Parkview Square is pure indulgence—and a beautiful contrast to the rest of Kampong Glam’s laid-back, bohemian energy just a few blocks away.

Where to Eat and Drink in Kampong Glam

There’s no shortage of food and drink in Kampong Glam, but these are the spots I’d recommend highest. From street-side teh tarik to cult-favorite nasi lemak, here are my top picks for eating and drinking your way through the neighborhood.

kampong glam
  • Good Luck Beerhouse: Craft beer bar by night, specialty coffee joint by day—local brews and laid-back vibes in the heart of Haji Lane.
  • Bhai Sarbat: A beloved street-side stall known for its frothy, pulled teh tarik and old-school charm.
  • % Arabica: Sleek, minimalist café serving top-tier espresso and single-origin beans with Japanese precision.
  • Kampong Glam Café: No-frills local eatery serving classic Malay comfort food—perfect for nasi padang and people-watching on Bussorah Street.
  • The Coconut Club: Trendy spot known for elevating nasi lemak to cult status, now housed in a stylish space just steps from Sultan Mosque.
  • Zam Zam: Legendary for its murtabak and biryani, this heritage restaurant has been serving up hearty Indian-Muslim fare since 1908.

Where to Stay In (and Near!) Kampong Glam

If you want to explore Kampong Glam without staying in the maze of narrow streets, these are my top picks. Two are technically over in Little India/Jalan Besar, but they’re an easy walk to Haji Lane—and way more convenient when it comes to luggage, sleep, and calling a cab.

FAQs about Kampong Glam in Singapore

What is so special about Kampong Glam?

Kampong Glam is special because it’s one of Singapore’s most vibrant cultural districts—where rich history meets modern, buzzy creativity. Here’s what makes it stand out:

1. Rich Malay & Muslim Heritage: Kampong Glam was once the seat of Malay royalty and remains a cornerstone of Singapore’s Muslim community, and you can see this immediately in the imposing Sultan Mosque.

2. Artsy, Trendy Vibe: It’s not just historic—it’s seriously cool. Haji Lane is packed full of indie boutiques, quirky bars, and ever-changing street art.

 3. A Foodie Heaven: From nasi padang and nasi lemak to Middle Eastern mezze  and plant-based fusion dishes, the area’s food is as diverse as its cultural influences.

Is Kampong Glam and Haji Lane the same?

Kampong Glam and Haji Lane are not the same, but they’re inseperably connected. Kampong Glam is the name of the broader historic neighborhood. Key attractions here include the Sultan Mosque, Malay Heritage Centre, Arab Street, Muscat Street, and you guessed it—Haji Lane. It’s known for its rich Malay-Muslim heritage mixed with modern cafes, street art, and boutiques.

Haji Lane is a narrow street within Kampong Glam. It’s famous for indie boutique shops, colorful murals, and quirky cafes. Haji Lane is a highlight within Kampong Glam, but Kampong Glam itself offers a lot more beyond that one street. If you’re visiting, it’s totally worth exploring the whole area—not just Haji Lane!

kampong glam

Is Haji Lane worth visiting?

Haji Lane is definitely considered to be a must-visit spot in Singapore, especially if you’re drawn to buzzy streets, indie shops, and popular dining experiences. Nestled within the historic Kampong Glam district, this narrow street is known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, murals, and bustling cafés.

I do, however, think it’s worth noting that it’s typically quite crowded, which can be (understandably) off-putting, especially in the relentless Singapore heat. I found myself getting a bit overwhelmed and overheated on Haji Lane, but I still think it’s worth checking out, especially if you’re going to be in Kampong Glam anyway.

Is Kampong Glam worth visiting?

Yes, Kampong Glam is absolutely worth visiting—it’s a buzzy and trendy neighborhood that has a rich historical and cultural past, and it’s a really central part of the fabric of the city. It’s one of Singapore’s oldest neighborhoods, once home to Malay royalty and still central to the Muslim community today.

What is Kampong Glam known for?

Kampong Glam is known for being one of Singapore’s most historic and culturally rich neighborhoods, with a good balance of Malay-Muslim heritage, amazing food, as well as trendy street art and indie shopping. It’s particularly famous for the iconic Sultan Mosque, and the endlessly buzzy and exciting Haji Lane.

Are Haji Lane and Arab Street the same?

Nope — Haji Lane and Arab Street are not the same, but they are right next to each other and are both iconic streets in Kampong Glam.

Haji Lane is a narrow, bohemian alleyway famous for its colorful street art, quirky boutiques, and indie cafés.

Arab Street is a larger, more traditional street known for its textile shops, Persian carpets, and Middle Eastern goods like perfumes and fabrics.

They’re different streets with different personalities that more or less encapsulate exactly what makes Kampong Glam unique.
